Will diesen Film wirklich jemand sehen?

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” (5 Nominierungen) vorbeigekommen.

Also dieses Jahr “The Artist,” “The Descendants,” “Hugo,” “Midnight in Paris” und “The Tree of Life.”

Distanzierte Gelassenheit?

A note: I wrote most of these before yesterday’s Oscar nominations were announced. My thoughts on them, and how I feel about the omissions of Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton, and much, much more in this year’s Oscar-Dialog (or Oscar dialogue?) starting tomorrow.

A few days late, but here’s what I watched last month:

“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” (Shane Black, 2005)
See here. Perfect film. (A+)

“Carlos” (Olivier Assayas, 2010)
Every single line of dialogue is exposition! Actors are forced to speak in languages they are obviously not comfortable in! Hated it. (D-)

“Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta” (“Castle in the Sky,” Hayao Miyazaki, 1986)
Beautiful animation, moving story. Loved it! (B+),

“Pulp Fiction” (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)
In chronological order, on YouTube! Hadn’t seen it in a while, was surprised how long it is.

“Shame” (Steve McQueen, 2011)
Complicated, challenging, at times almost unbearable. But Michael Fassbender gives the performance of his (already stellar) career, Carey Mulligan is fantastic as well. (B)

“Essential Killing” (Jerzy Skolimowski, 2010)
Very interesting. Vincent Gallo is great without words, the film looks stunning. (B)

“The Road” (John Hillcoat, 2009)
The book is one of my favorites, the film sadly cannot live up to it. (I don’t think any film could.) (C)

“Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” (Tom Tykwer, 2006)
Just awful. (D-)

“The Ides of March” (George Clooney, 2011)
I liked it. Ryan Gosling is as good here as he is in other recent films, Clooney is apt in front and behind the camera. (B-)

“50/50” (Jonathan Levine, 2011)
Great! It’s funny and touching and honest and – a first for me – has Seth Rogen playing a likeable character. (B+)

“Bad Teacher” (Jake Kasdan, 2011)
Flat out the funniest film of the year. David Edelstein nails it in his spot-on review.

“Win Win” (Thomas McCarthy, 2011)
Second viewing, still thoroughly impressed by the acting. That this is not Tom McCarthy’s best film just speaks to what an amazing filmmaker he really is. (B+)

“Notting Hill” (Roger Michell, 1999)
Had not seen this until now, much to the bewilderment of my flatmate. I don’t think I was quite as taken with it as she was, but I liked it, nontheless. (B-)

“Contagion” (Steven Soderbergh, 2011)
Despite Jude Law’s (character’s) best efforts to sink it, “Contagion” is a gripping drama with loads of great performances. (B-)

“We Need To Talk About Kevin” (Lynne Ramsay, 2011)
See “Shame,” above. The movie is very challenging, but Tilda Swinton is more than amazing. (B-)

“Pappa Ante Portas” (Vicco von Bülow, Renate Westphal-Lorenz, 1991)
With the whole family on Christmas Day. There’s no denying Loriot was one of the funniest, smartest artist in Germany’s history. (A)

“The Princess Bride” (Rob Reiner, 1987)
Another Christmas tradition. See here. (A-)

“Margin Call” (J.C. Chandor, 2011)
Second time, still great. (B+)

“Jodaeiye Nader az Simin” (“A Separation,” Asghar Farhadi, 2011)
Quite something. Maybe it was the Holiday food coma, maybe it was the torrent of foreign dialouge, but I strongly feel that I’ll have to watch “A Separation” again before I can really judge it.

“Terri” (Azazel Jacobs, 2011)
One of the many great child/youth performances of the year, the film takes turns that I wouldn’t have excpected any film to take. It’s definitely worth seeking out. (B-)

“Im Winter ein Jahr” (“A Year Ago in Winter,” Caroline Link, 2008)
Josef Bierbichler is great in just about anything, and I think Karoline Herfurth has a bright future in front of her if she takes more risks like this one. Kinda surprised this film didn’t get more attention when it came out. (B-)

“Rampart” (Oren Moverman, 2011)
Is to Woody Harrelson what “Shame” is to Fassbender and “Kevin” is to Swinton. I liked Moverman’s first film, “The Messenger” (also with Harrelson) better, but he’s certainly someone to watch out for. (C+)

“Kein Pardon” (Hape Kerkeling, 1993)
So much fun. (B+)

One pair of words that they will read over and over and over (I’m guessing 11 times in all) will be “The” and “Artist.” We know this

Tomorrow, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak and former Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence will open up a few envelopes and read a few words. One pair of words that they will read over and over and over (I’m guessing 11 times in all) will be “The” and “Artist.”

We know this because we’ve been there before. No one was surprised when “The King’s Speech” was nominated. Or “Avatar.” Or “The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King.” Or “Braveheart.” Or “Titanic.”

The fact that the Oscars are the last and most important in a long string of award shows adds to their prestige but also makes them predictable. After all, the people voting are just that: people.

We know what they will vote for because they already have. Precursor awards given out by The Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild, the Producers Guild and many more make multiple nominations for “The Artist” tomorrow a safe (but unrewarding) bet.

And we know a few other things, as well. Christopher Plummer (“Beginners”) will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor. At least one of the ladies from “The Help” (Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain) will get a Best Supporting Actress nod. Jean Dujardin’s nomination for Best Actor has been set in stone for a while now.

But what about the things we don’t know? That’s where there’s room for surprise, both positive and negative.

Sure, everyone can agree that “The Artist” is a likeable, charming, maybe even great film. But is it a cinematic achievement on one level with Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life”? Is any film from last year?

Should the Academy fail to nominate “The Tree of Life” for Best Picture, and at this point I’d say that’s more likely than not, I’m certain it will go down as one of the greatest Oscar snubs in history since, fittingly enough, Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which, in 1969 was nominated for Director, Screenplay, Art Direction and Special Visual Effects (for which it won) but not Best Picture. (Who was, you ask? “Funny Girl,” “The Lion in Winter,” Rachel, Rachel,” “Romeo and Juliet” and, the winner: “Oliver!” Obviously “2001″ didn’t stand a chance.)

Speaking of history: it may be written tomorrow if Andy Serkis is recognized for his motion capture-aided work in “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” Actors of the old guard may look at his performance as ‘cheating,’ but is it really that different from actors undergoing physical changes through heavy make-up or prosthetics? Serkis’ Ceasar shows an emotional depth, a believability that is lacking in even some of the human characters in that same film. Of course the end product would not be possible without the WETA magic at work, which is why I hope they will get a SFX nomination. But underneath it all and shining all the way through is Andy Serkis.

We will know more tomorrow. Here are a few more surprises I’m rooting for.

Nominees for the 2012 Academy Awards will be announced on January 24, 5.30am PST. (That’s 14:30 Uhr for my German readers.)

I did this last year, why not make it a tradition?

Oscar nominations will be announced in 11 days, on January 24. And while it’s not as obvious who will get in as it was last year with “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network” set in stone, there are a few names and titles that would be a (pleasant) surprise.

So, once again, here’s my wish list for this year’s Academy Awards. It worked with “Dogtooth” last time, so here’s hoping!

Best Actress: Tilda Swinton, “We Need To Talk About Kevin”
Yes, I would probably still list Swinton if her performance in Lynne Ramsay’s hard-to-swallow drama wasn’t as perfect and singular as it is. But her follow-up to the overlooked (by the Academy) turns in “Julia” and “I Am Love” shows once more why Tilda Swinton is one of the most talented actors of our time.
Granted, her chances for “Kevin” are better than they were for the other two films. Swinton is nominated for a Golden Globe this year and has already won a few awards this season (the most meaningless in Oscar-terms being the European Film Award). Still, she’s anything but a safe bet for an Oscar nomination.

Best Original Score: Alberto Iglesias, “The Skin I Live In”
Front-runner Ludovic Bource (“The Artist“) had nothing to do with the most talked about musical moment in that film – the blatant usage of Bernard Herrmann’s famous “Vertigo” score. Pointless, maybe, but certainly not as disgusting as Kim Novak’s cry of ‘rape.’ The other names in the field are as predictable as they may be good: Williams, Shore, Desplat. Even Reznor/Ross won’t be a surprise anymore, although it would be great to see their win last year open doors for, say, The Chemical Brothers, whose “Hanna” score may be the best workout music in quite some time.
Who I really want to see nominated is Iglesias, who also scored “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” this year. But it’s his ominous, thrilling work for Pedro Almodóvar’s horror flick that really deserves to be up there.

Best Cinematography: Hélène Louvart, “Pina”
From the press kit: “For the 3D image composition Wim Wenders convinced one of the most experienced 3D pioneers in stereography, Alain Derobe, to join his team. … Derobe developed a special 3D camera rig mounted on a crane. To create the depth of the room it is very important to stay close to the dancers and to follow them: ‘Normally, with a dance film, we would erect cameras in front of the stage, far away from the action on stage,’ says Alain Derobe, ‘for PINA we positioned the cameras between the dancers. The camera literally dances with them.’”
DP Louvart opens up a whole new world on the (3D) screen, one that I enjoyed so much that I didn’t wait long to immerse myself in it a second time just days after I first saw it. “Pina” is groundbreaking entertainment and its cinematography the best argument for 3D so far.

Best Actor: Hunter McCracken, “The Tree of Life”
Yes, I’m still beating that drum. McCracken gave a stunning debut performance in Malick’s masterpiece but has not been heard from since. He (or his parents) wisely decided that a proper education would be worth more than an awards run, so instead of hitting the campaign trail McCracken stayed in high school. Good for him, but he deserves more than the lone Chicago Film Critics Association nomination (for Most Promising Performer) he got so far.

Best Director: Thomas McCarthy, “Win Win”
Tom McCarthy is one of the greatest directors currently working. Bold statement, I know, but I can back it up. Think of his films, “The Station Agent,” “The Visitor” and “Win Win.” What do they have in common? Sweeping vistas? Exciting special effects? No. Truly moving stories and honest, restrained performances? Yes. And that’s no coincidence. Sure, Patricia Clarkson or Richard Jenkins are gifted actors, but it takes a director like McCarthy (who is also an actor) to lift them to the next level. And that’s what he does with Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan in “Win Win,” both of whom giving the best performance of their careers. McCarthy is a cinematic treaure, and it’s time the Academy recognized that.

Best Sound Mixing: Robert Eber, “Drive”
Next to “The Tree of Life” and “Pina,” I’d say this is the film where it’s most essential you watch it in a theater. And one of the (granted, many) reasons is the superb sound mix. Of course the Sounds are tricky categories; ideally sound effects and mixing should be something that goes unnoticed by most viewers, yet year after year it’s the more showy offerings that get the nominations (see also Best Make-Up). And while I did notice the sound mix on “Drive” I was never distracted by it. On the contrary, it heightened the experience, especially in the much debated second half of the film. Sadly, with no precursor awards or nominations for “Drive” in this category, this is never going to happen. “Transformers” it is, then.

Best Picture: “Beginners”
Okay, here’s a bet for you: Sunday night, Christopher Plummer will win the Golden Globe for his supporting performance in Mike Mills’ gem of a movie. Next, he will be nominated for the Oscar, which he will also win. I know, safe bet so far, so I’ll toss in one more thing: Mills will get a nomination for Original Screenplay, but lose to Woody Allen. And that will be all the Oscars will have to offer “Beginners.” Because, as the films so beautifully shows us, life’s just not fair. If it were, “Beginners” would be up for Best Picture. Alas!

Best Supporting Actor: Corey Stoll, “Midnight in Paris”
Speaking of life being unfair: If “Midnight in Paris” deserves any recognition – and I don’t believe it deserves much, it’s for Stoll’s scene-stealing turn as Ernest Hemingway, which may be the only thing that keeps Allen’s film from being totally forgettable.

Best Picture: “Margin Call”
Writer/director J.C. Chandor has a (small) chance of scoring a Screenplay nod, but that’s about it for this smart, exciting tale of financial collapse. In some other year there would be talk of Kevin Spacey, Zachary Quinto (Leading) Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci (Supporting) and Chandor (Directing). But as well-timed with the Occupy movement and the general mood of the public “Margin Call” was, it did not fare well in the awards conversation, which is a shame.

Best Supporting Actor: Andy Serkis, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”
The argument has been made. A lot, and well. I don’t need to rehash it.

And, finally…

Best Picture, Director (Abbas Kiarostami), Screenplay (Kiarostami), Actress (Juliette Binoche) and Actor (William Shimell), “Copie conforme” (“Certified Copy”)

Those are my unlikely but deserving picks. What are yours?

I’ve got a mildly bad cold right now and don’t feel much like writing, but I just did something like a Top 5 “Movies of 2011″-list on Twitter so I’d thought I’d copy it here so that you can comment on on it or whatever. Also keep in mind that I will most likely revise the list once I’ve seen more films (holds-out include “The Artist,” “Weekend,” both Spielberg movies, tons of other stuff), but, yeah, this’ll do for now.

Daher fielen viele tolle Filme wie „Der Malteser Falke,“ „About Schmidt,“ „Vom Winde verweht,“ „No Country for Old Men“ oder auch „Mystic River“ raus.

„The Road,“ „Das Parfüm“ oder „Der Vorleser.“ Die Filme „The Road“ und „Perfume: The Story of a Murderer“ haben mir allerdings leider so gar nicht gefallen.

Nebels #5
Die Filme Stanley Kubricks,
insbesondere „Lolita,“ „A Clockwork Orange“ und „The Shining.“

Sonjas #3
„L.A. Confidential“
(Curtis Hanson, 1997)

Nebels #2
„The Princess Bride“
(Rob Reiner, 1987)

Sonjas #1
„Tod in Venedig“
(Luchino Visconti, 1971)

Nebels #1
„The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy“
(Garth Jennings, 2005)

Mos Def („Mr.

My first reaction was somewhere along the lines of “Huh? Wha- Hm?” but the the more I thought about it the more impressed I became. Stunning. (A)

“Crazy, Stupid, Love.” (Glenn Ficarra, John Requa, 2011)
Loved it. Ficarra and Requa’s follow-up to “I Love You Phillip Morris” is just as funny, smart and sweet. (B)

“The Lion King” (3D) (Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff, 1994/2011)
My thoughts here. Fantastic film, 3D non-essential but well executed. (A)

“Eastern Promises” (David Cronenberg, 2007)
Another great Cronenberg/Mortensen collaboration (although I liked “A Hiostory of Violence” better) with fine performances all around, including from Naomi Watts who I love more and more these days. (B-)

“The Dreamers” (Bernardo Bertolucci, 2003)
I don’t quite know what I was expecting, but “The Dreamers” didn’t deliver. And another disappointing performance from Michael Pitt. (C)

“Mullholland Dr.” (David Lynch, 2001)
Holy crap holy crap holy crap. (B-)

“Super 8” (J.J. Abrams, 2011)
One ‘homage’ shy of feeling wholly unoriginal. The film is carried by Elle Fanning and somewhat crumbles in her (unnecessary) absence later on. (B-)

“Cold Weather” (Aaron Katz, 2010)
Wonderful. (And not just because it’s an opportunity to look at Trieste Dunn.) (B)

“Gamer” (Neveldine/Taylor, 2009)
Mostly forgettable. (C)

“Beginners” (Mike Mills, 2011)
I fell head-over-heels in love with it. Easily one of the best movies of the year. (A)

“Drive” (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2011)
A second time on the big screen in Luxembourg. Easily one of the best movies of the year. (A)

“Copie conforme” (Abbas Kiarostami, 2010)
Guess what: Easily one of the best movies of the year. At least for me, I recognize that it can be very divisive, too. (A)

“The Switch” (Josh Gordon, Will Speck, 2010)
My love for anything Jason Bateman saved this film for me, but just barely. (C+)

“An Education” (Lone Scherfig, 2009)
Holds up very well (terrible, tacked-on final minute aside) with great performances. Dominic Cooper steals it! (B+)

“Captain America: The First Avenger” (Joe Johnston, 2011)
It’s good. That is all. (B-)

“Our Idiot Brother” (Jesse Peretz, 2011)
It’s not bad, but it doesn’t quite land right. Too bad, the cast is certainly promising enough. (C+)
