August’s movies reviewed

  • Hanna (Joe Wright, 2011)
Chemical Brothers’ score is awesome, as is the movie. U-Bahn fight scene kicks (literal) ass. (B)
  • Shortbus (John Cameron Mitchell, 2006)
    Beautiful. (B)
  • Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop (Rodman Flender, 2011)
I enjoyed it, but I’ve been a fan for almost 15 years now. Don’t know if it can hold your interest if you aren’t.
  • Megamind (Tom McGrath, 2010)
So much fun! In a similar vein to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, it has great jokes and lots of action. (B+)
  • Schwerkraft (Maximilian Erlenwein, 2009)
More people should know about this film. It’s dark. It’s funny. Jürgen Vogel’s in it. What’s not to like? (B-)
  • Flipped (Rob Reiner, 2010)
Oh boy, this is bad. Really, really bad. There’s so much wrong with this movie, I wouldn’t know where to begin. (D-)
  • White Material (Claire Denis, 2009)
Powerful. Isabelle Huppert does not disappoint. She never does. (B+)
  • You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (Woody Allen, 2010)
Does what it sets out to do, I guess. Naomi Watts is quite good. (C+)
  • The Invention of Lying (Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson, 2009)
Alternative titles: The Invention of Religion, or Religion is a Lie. But heavy-handedness aside its a funny little movie. (B-)
  • X-Men: First Class (Matthew Vaughn, 2011)
Lots of fun. Fassbender steals it. Also Rose Byrne is very pretty, I did not know that before. (B)
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Rupert Wyatt, 2011)
It’s good! After a few minutes you forget that the apes are just CGI. After a few more minutes you kinda accept that the humans are just sub-par actors. (B-)
